Your girlfriend probably also warned you against Jack-in-the-Box, I hope. I assume that basically any first meat with tons of, well, meat and also tons of grease is not a good way to kick off your return to your previous lifestyle.

I joined Toastmasters for the same reason. It's amazing what I formerly found difficult is now second nature. Public speaking is like learning to drive. After while you're not overthinking and nervous about it. True, there are times, like competitions in which the butterflies start flying, but I have the confidence to manage it. I think there are 2 types of nervous speakers. Those that avoid public speaking at all costs and those that do something about it like joining Toastmasters. I have friends that have fear of public speaking but would avoid it rather than join Toastmasters. Imagine all that energy it takes to avoid public speaking.

My rule is this: My time is $90/hour. For example, I often get offers to listen to a "90 minute-no obligation" time share offer so that I can draw for my free prize. Free prizes include " a Corvette, a free trip to Vegas, and etc. He's my Timeshare formula: M PV , M = my cost, PV = prize value. M = 90H, H = hours spend traveling to/from+fuel/depreciation+hours listening/begging to get out.

example, travel/presentation time = 3 hours + 40 mile round trip (50 cents/mile) 3(90)+20 = $290. My cost is $290.

Prize value: 2010 Corvette, value = $50,000. Chances in winning = 1 in 1000. PV = $50,000 (0.001) = $50.

Since M = $290, PV = $50. Since M>PV, my cost is greater than the prize value. Therefore, It makes no sense to me to visit the Timeshare to get my "free prize". Of course I would likely win the Vegas Trip, However. Let's say the hotel fare is $500. I still have to make my own flight plans ($250 RT for two). Therefore, M = $290+250 = $540 which is greater than $500.

Why is my time worth $90/hr. I make far less than that at work. However, I value my time because once its gone, I won't get it back.

I completely agree with personal development. I think the unhappiest people in the world are those who have high expectations and depend on others to carry the load. Growing up in a family of 9 kids, I did not get much parental attention so I had to learn the hard way the we must develop ourselves. It has not been an easy journey, but once one accepts responsibility for his or her happiness, then the most important step has been made. I wished I had joined Toastmasters 20 years ago.

I really like the personal growth. I find so many people who are just going through the motions of life and wonder why they are not happy. I like your proactive approach and finding the constructive spin. I'm not Catholic either, but I do appreciate some of the things Catholics do. The church gives people, goals, structure, and support (GSS). GSS is essential for a good life.

Ali,

Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate your encouragement, and your continued support. :) I feel like every time you comment, you leave a jewel of knowledge that expands on my own thoughts. Thank you for that!

Isn't that what personal development is all about - making transitions? Well at least making transitions that are positive. I've never thought of it that way. Maybe one of the best skills to have is to be able to transition easily. Set your mind to something and if you're good at transitioning, you can make it happen easily.

Looks like you're doing all right Neal :) Transitions are sometimes fun and often inconvenient but good ones are worth every bit - and a lot more - in time.

Yep! I suffer the same problem - I'm all talk. In fact people are amazed at how I can blabber on so much but do so little. It seems like I can solve everyone's problems except my own. This is the biggest roadblock in my own personal development and thanks for hi-lighting it again!
